Inspiration from an unlikely place

This recent event has caused a new spark in me. I'm talking about the Virginia Tech shootings, for those of you keeping track. I feel deeply for these people, though I have never met them. Strangely, Chris Richardson's reaction on AI tonight got a rise out of me. His artistry was affected by this event, and he knew some of those people. This event has caused me to turn inward and make it selfish, as awful as that sounds.
I've often struggled with who I want to be as a journalist. I am told to be as unbiased as possible, to give both sides of the story, to be neutral and objective. Can I be the first to say that that is a load of bullshit? Seriously. An entire load. What is wrong with being passionate about a story that you are reporting or writing about? I'm sure more people were moved to action when Anderson Cooper freaked out on Senator Mary Landrieu then any other report on the Hurricane Katrina fiasco. Isn't that the point of journalism? To make people care?
Bottom line is, it's hard to shut yourself off from something you care about. No matter if you are a CNN news anchor or an American Idol contestant.
But I guess it's harder still to make people care as much as you do.
